Caring for and celebrating our cassowaries

Garners Beach Cassowary Recovery Facility

On 31 March 2016 Mission Beach residents helped to celebrate a new agreement to operate the local cassowary rehabilitation centre at Garners Beach.

Rainforest Reserves Australia has agreed to manage the day-to-day operations of the cassowary rehabilitation centre at Garners Beach for the next three years. Rainforest Reserves Australia is a not-for-profit organisation based in Far North Queensland. CEO Carolyn Emms said "We live up here and we have an interest in the conservation of cassowaries."

Since July 2015 EHP has allocated $80,000 to upgrade facilities at the rehabilitation centre and to allow the centre to continue operating. The centre can now accept adult cassowaries as well as chicks.
