Wet Tropics Management Authority Board of Directors
The WTMA Board of Directors is set up under the Wet Tropics World Heritage Protection and Management Act 1993. The Board consists of seven directors, six of whom serve as directors in a part time capacity. Two directors are nominated by the Australian Government and two by the Queensland Government. The Chair and a designated Aboriginal director are nominated by the Wet Tropics Ministerial Council. The Executive Director of the Authority is a non-voting Board director. The Board’s key function is to implement programs to meet Australia’s international obligations for the Area under the World Heritage Convention (see about WTMA for more information about WTMA's management structure and World Heritage goals).
At 14 April 2011 the Board of Directors comprised (with term expiry date):
• Associate Professor Peter Valentine (9 June 2013)
• Dr Alastair Birtles (9 June 2013)
• Cr Julia Leu (9 June 2013)
• Indigenous position vacant
• Indigenous position vacant
• Mr Andrew Maclean (WTMA Executive Director).
The WTMA Board generally meets quarterly and may also meet to discuss special issues or decide matters out-of-session. The Board also receives advice from a range of committees and liaison groups which it appoints:
• Community Consultative Group
• Conservation Sector Liaison Group
• Rainforest Aboriginal Advisory Committee
• Scientific Advisory Committee
• Tourism Industry Liaison Group.
