Kuranda Range Road upgradeProposed Avondale bridge

On 26 September 2007 the Wet Tropics Management Authority issued a permit to the Department of Main Roads to construct the Kuranda Range Road upgrade in the World Heritage Area. The Board’s decision follows several years of planning and consultation in the regional community. Main Roads estimates that the road upgrade will take 10 to 15 years. Should the State Government decide to proceed with the upgrade, the Authority has a commitment from the Department of Main Roads to provide sufficient resources to ensure high standards of environmental management and rehabilitation during the road’s construction.

Australian Government decision on the proposed rezoning

On 25 May 2007, under the EPBC Act, the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources approved the Queensland Department of Main Roads' proposal to 'construct and operate the Kuranda Range Road upgrade between Smithfield and Kuranda' subject to a list of conditions (see approval notice).
