Mushrooms & Fungi - Identifying Fungi

Photo by Mike TrenerryIf what you've seen in our mushrooms and fungi pages has sparked your interest in learning more about these workhorses of the forest, you're probably wondering how you tell them apart. At first, the various toadstools might seem like a cap on top of a stem and some of them are taller or wider or different colours. But the fine points of being able to tell one mushroom from another are more involved than that. As you start to compare the different mushrooms you find, more things start to become obvious such as the shape of the stem, the amount of curve on the cap, if the cap curves the other way, if the edges are lacey, and so on.

To help you look at mushrooms and fungi a little closer, some drawings are presented here which show the subtle differences that mycologists use to identify species. There are many more details than what's presented here but these are some simple descriptions to get you started.
