Focus Question: How can you and your family make a difference?

6.1 A Code for Conservation

Devise a personal code of ethics …that helps you live in way that will ensure the survival of the Wet Tropics.

Questions to get you thinking
• What are the BIGGEST THREATS to the survival of the Wet Tropics?
• What are YOU doing in your own life that might increase these threats?
• What is your FAMILY doing that might increase these threats (think about energy use, waste disposal, pets, plants, transport, water use and household purchases)?
• What parts of your lifestyle could you CHANGE that would help the Wet Tropics survive?
• What PRINCIPLES could you live by that would help the Wet Tropics survive?
• How could you ensure that you ABIDED BY your code of ethics?

Conditions
Your code of ethics should not only address the questions above, but also draw on your knowledge of the Wet Tropics that you’ve learnt in previous activities.
Your code of ethics should contain at least 15 principles.
Each principle should be supported a paragraph that explains how this principle helps the Wet Tropics survive.
Include a bibliography of the sources you used.

6.2 Households for Heritage

Devise a household checklist …that helps your family live in way that will ensure the survival of the Wet Tropics.

Questions to get you thinking
• What are the BIGGEST THREATS to the survival of the Wet Tropics?
• What are YOU doing in your own life that might increase these threats?
• What is your FAMILY doing that might increase these threats (think about energy use, waste disposal, pets, plants, transport, water use and household purchases)?
• What parts of your lifestyle could you CHANGE that would help the Wet Tropics survive?
• What PRINCIPLES could your household follow in their everyday lives that would help the Wet Tropics survive?
• How could you ensure that your household ABIDED BY their household checklist?

Teach a lesson …that helps your school operate in a way that will ensure the survival of the Wet Tropics.

Questions to get you thinking
• What are the BIGGEST THREATS to the survival of the Wet Tropics?
• What are STUDENTS in your school doing that might increase these threats?
• What are STAFF in your school doing that might increase these threats?
• How does your school currently HELP the Wet Tropics survive?
• What do all members of your school NEED TO KNOW that will ensure the survival of the Wet Tropics?
• Who in your COMMUNITY could your school turn to for hep?
• Regarding your lesson, what types of INFORMATION should you include (visuals, games, handouts, sounds, excursions, experiments, or other lesson ideas)?

Conditions
Your lesson should not only address the questions above, but also draw on your knowledge of the Wet Tropics that you’ve learnt in previous activities.
Length of lesson: 30 minutes approximately.
Your lesson should use different information-giving methods – ask your teacher for ideas!
Include a bibliography of the sources you used.

Create an advertisement …that helps your community live in a way that will ensure the survival of the Wet Tropics.

Questions to get you thinking
• What are the BIGGEST THREATS to the survival of the Wet Tropics?
• What are BUSINESSES in your community doing that might increase these threats?
• What is your COUNCIL doing that might increase these threats?
• In what ways does your COMMUNITY currently help the Wet Tropics survive?
• What does your community NEED TO KNOW that will ensure the survival of the Wet Tropics?
• Who in your COMMUNITY can you turn to for help?
• Regarding your advertisement, what types of INFORMATION should you include and what is the best way to PRESENT this information (newspaper, television, radio or internet)?

Conditions
Your advertisement should not only address the questions above, but also draw on your knowledge of the Wet Tropics that you’ve learnt in previous activities.
TV advertisement – 1 minute, Radio Advertisement – 1 minute, Newspaper advertisement – one full page, Internet advertisement – one full screen.
Include a bibliography of the sources you used.
