Unit 10 - After the Excursion

Representing experiences

After students have visited a rainforest, there are many different ways for them to represent their experiences and understandings.

The activities in this section are creative and child-initiated using a wide variety of materials in diverse ways.

These activities are based on the understanding that students have undergone orientation before and during the excursion and have been able to observe, understand and discuss what they have experienced.

The purpose is to develop students’ range of techniques for making representations.  Students will use a range of methods such as mapping, painting, claymation, collage, slideshow and drama. Each time a student uses a different method for representing you can see them building their conceptual understanding of rainforest processes.

Children share and extend their own ideas creating new ways of representing experiences, giving them ownership of the work they produce and setting their own goals. These post excursion activities are ideally suited for a classroom with different ability levels.

Framing questions:

  • Why should we represent our rainforest experiences?
  • How can we do this?
  • What would we need to be able to achieve this?
  • How and where will this be displayed?
  • Who can help us?
  • Who will we invite to visit and view our rainforest representations?
  • What language do we need to talk about our rainforest visit?
