The Mareeba Wetlands has been created as a sanctuary for savanna wildlife which was once plentiful throughout the area. It is run by a non-profit, community based, conservation organisation. The 5,000 acre reserve is home for a rich, diverse plant and animal population. A multitude of birds frequent the wetlands and surrounding savanna woodlands, especially in the dry season when water is scarce elsewhere. Keen twitchers can study jabirus, jacanas and numerous other water birds. The savanna also provides a safe shelter for many native Australian animals, such as eastern grey kangaroos, snakes, frogs, freshwater crocodiles and goannas. There is a visitor centre full of interesting natural information and displays. After a full day of exploring this piece of inland Australia by foot or by boat (tours are available), you can relax here, enjoy a cool drink and watch the picturesque sunset across the water.
The Lookout walk is a fairly easy 2 kilometre walk, but includes a climb requiring some physical exertion. The effort is generously rewarded by the scenic view of the lagoon, surrounding savanna, and tablelands. From this point it's a downhill stroll back to the visitor centre.
