Places and Drives - The Southern Tropics - Hinchinbrook Island

Hinchinbrook is the largest of 25 islands that lie offshore from the Wet Tropics coast. It is sandwiched by two World Heritage Areas - the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef. One of Australia's most spectacular walks is the four-day (32 km/20 mile) Thorsborne Track named after Cardwell conservationists Arthur and Margaret Thorsborne. The track is maintained by Banjin rangers. It is not for the ill-prepared. You need to be fit and ready for rain, insects, slippery creek crossings and more.

How to get there
Ferries leave the mainland at Cardwell and Lucinda. For more information and to apply for a permit (visitor numbers are limited), contact QPWS in Cardwell on (07) 4066 8601.
