Know before you go - Respecting Aboriginal Culture

When you visit sites in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area you are entering places that have been of great cultural significance to rainforest Aboriginal people for many thousands of years. Many of the roads and walking tracks are the traditional walking tracks of rainforest Aboriginal people.

Government agencies are working with the traditiional owners to ensure that the management of these sites respects these important and ongoing cultural traditions and does not threaten important cultural places. This will ensure rainforest Aboriginal people have a say in the future management of these sites, benefit from nature-based tourism and are able to protect special places.

Aboriginal people accept a cultural responsibility for visitors to their traditional lands and they wish you a safe visit. They also ask that you respect their land and culture in your behaviour.

For more detailed information please read the "Aboriginal Tourism Association brochure" [PDF - 432kb].
