The Wet Tropics Management Authority Board is proud to announce the launch of the prestigious Cassowary Awards with nominations now open until 8 September 2017.
Since 1999 the Cassowary Awards have acknowledged and celebrated deserving community members, groups, organisations and schools for their outstanding contributions to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
More than 140 people, groups and organisations have been recognised across the breadth of the World Heritage area, which stretches between Cooktown in the north and Townsville in the south.
The Chair of the Wet Tropics Management Authority Board, Leslie Shirreffs said, “World Heritage is our promise to the future, and we want to celebrate those exceptional people who use their skills, knowledge and passion to protect and showcase the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area”.
“We are seeking nominations from the community to publicly acknowledge these local champions.”
The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is the natural and cultural pride of the north, particularly for those who dedicate their time and effort to ensure that it is protected and presented for current and future generations.
“The Board believes it is important to highlight the positive difference people can make to the protection and presentation of the Area’s cultural assets, its biodiversity, and aesthetic and recreational values”, Ms Shirreffs said.
