Collaboration strong at Traditional Owners Forum

Participants from 19 Aboriginal corporations representing the majority of Wet Tropics Rainforest Aboriginal groups attended the Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples Regional Workshop at Palm Cove in late October.

Traditional Owners from as far as Rossville in the north and Townsville in the south discussed key issues arising from the first phase of the Wet Tropics Management Plan Review, and provided direction to the Wet Tropics Management Authority on phase two of the project.

Staff from the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service), North Queensland Land Council and Terrain NRM also attended, using the opportunity to network with Aboriginal representative groups.

The workshop delivered resolutions and directions to the Authority for ongoing collaboration with Traditional Owners throughout phase two of the plan review.

We are also working with other agencies to review our role in the implementation of the Regional Agreement, with a view to contemporise responsibilities in an addendum.

Consultations with Traditional Owners will continue and the Authority thanks all participants for their input to date. We look forward to sharing more results and findings from the weekend in due course.
