Lloyd Neilsen is a well-known figure in Wet Tropics bird watching circles.

Renowned for his extraordinary talents in bird illustration, Lloyd is also respected for his expert knowledge and recording of bird behaviours.

His valuable contribution to the Wet Tropics bird world, as a self-taught ornithologist, has seen him awarded the prestigious John Hobbs medal.

The medal, awarded by Birds Australia recognises outstanding contributions to ornithology as an amateur scientist. It commemorates John Hobbs, a police officer and amateur ornithologist who lived from 1920 to 1990.
