Nominations open for the 20th Cassowary Awards

Planning is under way for a sparkling 20th anniversary event to celebrate community participation in the Wet Tropics, and award nominations are open.

The Wet Tropics Management Authority (the Authority) manages the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and the 20th Cassowary Awards—to be held at Tjapukai NOW on Friday 6 September—which will shine a light on some of the outstanding individuals and groups who share their dedication to this amazing environmental and cultural landscape.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity to applaud our conservation trailblazers, cultural leaders, tourism innovators and others who are committed to this internationally significant World Heritage Area on our doorstep,” said Ms Chrissy Grant, Chair of the Authority’s Board.

“They all share a passion for the Wet Tropics, as well a desire to ensure its wellbeing into the future. For some it’s their life’s work, while others are just beginning their love affair with the Wet Tropics.

“We’ve revamped the awards categories this year, and they remain as broad and inclusive as ever with eight categories including Climate Change Leadership, World Heritage Presentation, People Country Culture, and the Young Cassowary Award.

“There is always a strong focus on community participation, because caring for this incredibly special place is no easy or short-term task, and cannot be done without the support and dedication of the local community.”

The Cassowary Awards, initiated in 1999, are the only ones in Australia that celebrate community contributions to conserving, protecting and raising awareness of a World Heritage Area.

Kylie Freebody received a Cassowary Award in 2022, and was thrilled by the recognition.

“No-one is involved in environmental work for accolades, but winning a Cassowary Award felt like your peers giving you a big pat on the back and saying they appreciate your commitment,” she said.
