The Wet Tropics Management Authority presents Science in the Pub: Ants—the good, the bad and the crazy.

Exploring the fascinating role of ants in the Wet Tropics with ant expert Dr Kirsti Abbott.

We don’t often give much thought to ants, except perhaps when they invade our houses. However, the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is home to a huge range of ant species, which play important and diverse roles such as dispersing seeds and defending plants from insect attack.

Keynote speaker: Dr Kirsti Abbott
Dr Abbott is an ant expert and science communicator with a passion for inspiring younger generations to connect with their inner insect lover. She cut her scientific teeth at James Cook University investigating the effect of the Papaya Fruit Fly Eradication Program on rainforest insects, and now leads the UNE Discovery Program at the University of New England.

Welcome: Mr Gudju Gudju Fourmile
Gudju Gudju is a Gimuy Wulubara Yidinji Traditional Owner, tribal ecologist and director of Abriculture. He will give his unique perspective of ants on country and Abriculture’s involvement in the Authority’s Yellow Crazy Ant Eradication Program.
