Staff discussed with the Senator and his advisors the unique properties of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and our successful partnerships with the community and other organisations to protect, conserve and present World Heritage values.
Senator Lazarus and his team were particularly interested in our approaches to partnering with the tourism industry and the engagement of Traditional Owners.
The group also discussed the challenges facing management of the World Heritage Area including biosecurity threats, risk of climate change and the balance between development and protection.
The Senator committed to working with the Authority to benefit the region and plans to make regular visits to Far North Queensland.
