The 2019 Far North Wilderness Bike Tour

Senior Planning Officer Eli Taylor went mountain biking on the 2019 Far North Wilderness Bike Tour.

In its 18th year, the ride is organised by the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre. The bike tour climbs from sea level between Cardwell and Tully up the Kirrama Range. Riders wind their way through lush rainforest, cooling waterfalls, freshwater creeks, fantastic gorges, wet and dry sclerophyll forest. The ride traverses the western boundary of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, passing through Ravenshoe, Atherton and Mareeba.

Eli has been mountain biking for about three years and thought the ride would be an incredible way to explore parts of the Wet Tropics that are seldom seen and hard, if not impossible, to access by car. He loved the experience of riding through the transition from rainforest to open eucalypt forest.

‘On the bike you really got a chance to observe the incremental changes in the vegetation, spot wildlife and enjoy incredible views while still covering a lot of ground over the day.’ Eli said.
