Activity 3 : How We Use the World Heritage Area

Focus
Many local businesses rely on the World Heritage Area, and this is often reflected in their company names. Some uses of the World Heritage Area may be identified by searching through the local phone book.

Background
Since World Heritage listing there have been many new ventures which are related to the Wet Tropics environment and use a rainforest theme to promote their business. A useful resource to show the students are the short videos How do People Use the Rainforest? and Why is the Rainforest Important to You?

The white pages of the telephone book show businesses using ‘rainforest’, ‘wet tropics’ and ‘tropical’ in their names. Yellow pages in the telephone book show businesses related to the World Heritage Area under the titles:
• tourist attractions and services, tourist bureaus, adventure tourism;
• outdoor adventure activities and supplies;
• organisations – conservation and environmental
• research
• nurseries
• environmental consultants
There are also a lot of spin-off businesses which cater for the needs of people visiting the rainforest (eg. car rental, restaurants, accommodation).

Pedagogy/teaching strategies
• Listing of businesses and organisations related to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
• Brainstorming of types of jobs derived from different businesses.

Activity sequence
1. Divide the class into groups representing different industries. Each group has a telephone book containing white and yellow pages (also available on the internet).
2. Half the groups use white pages while the other half uses the yellow pages and list the businesses directly related to using Wet Tropics resources in some way.
3. After the lists are complete, brainstorm the jobs derived from each business.
4. Group reporters list types of businesses and related jobs.
5. For additional information consult the ‘job vacancy’ section of the local newspaper.
6 Graph the different jobs derived from the main industries listed above.
