Focus
Maps provide a spatial representation of rainforest distribution.

Background
The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is relatively small but contains a significant proportion of Australia’s rainforests. The following maps show regional, Australian and world rainforest distribution:
Vegetation Map
Eastern Australian Rainforests Map
World Rainforests Map

Pedagogy/teaching strategies
Refer to Top Level Structures – Listing; Compare and Contrast

Activity Sequence
1. Compare Australia’s rainforest areas using the National Rainforest Distribution Table. Use a computer program to convert this information into a graphical representation (bar, pie or line graphs).
2. Examine the Vegetation Map. Note how the forests are fragmented. Propose a corridor plan that will connect major rainforest areas.
3. Use the World Rainforests Map to compare the area of the World Heritage Area with New Guinea, the Amazon, Congo and Asia. Arrange the countries in ascending order according to their area of rainforest.
