The National Heritage List recognises places of outstanding heritage value to Australia. It includes natural, historic and Indigenous places that help tell the story of our nation and contribute to Australia’s identity, history and environment.
The Wet Tropics’ National Heritage listing recognises both its internationally significant natural values and the unique and enduring cultural values of Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples.
Natural heritage values
The Wet Tropics of Queensland was added to the National Heritage List in 2007 for its natural values, corresponding to its World Heritage criteria.
Cultural heritage values
In 2012, the National Heritage listing was expanded to include the Indigenous cultural values of the Wet Tropics, recognising the enduring connection of Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples to Country and their continuous stewardship of the Area over thousands of years.
The recognition followed decades of advocacy by Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples to ensure their cultural heritage was acknowledged alongside the natural values of the Wet Tropics.
The Wet Tropics is unique in Australia's cultural history as the only area in Australia where Aboriginal people lived permanently in the rainforest, adapting successfully to seasonal abundance and lean times.
Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples were able to permanently occupy the Wet Tropics rainforests because they developed tools and techniques which allowed them to exploit toxic plants and other resources throughout the year.
In addition to unique technologies, sophisticated fire management and the transfer of cultural knowledge, beliefs and practices across generations was essential for Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples’ permanent occupation of the rainforest.
Together, the natural and cultural values of the Wet Tropics tell a story of extraordinary biodiversity, enduring connection to Country, and a shared responsibility to care for one of Australia's most important heritage places.
