The Wet Tropics zoning map (a statutory map) shows how the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (the Area) is divided into management zones under the Wet Tropics Management Plan 1998.
These zones help manage activities to protect World Heritage values while allowing appropriate activities to occur.
There are three management zones, and all have a purpose to protect and enhance World Heritage values and integrity of the Area. The three zones each have a different level of protection and allowable activities:
Zone A is primarily about protection; the focus is on restoring and protecting natural values. Only limited, low-impact activities are allowed in some areas, including limited visitor infrastructure.
Zone B is similar to Zone A except that it is also a buffer to Zone C. In limited circumstances, parts of Zone B may be rezoned to support essential community infrastructure (such as roads, water or power), where this is clearly necessary.
Zone C supports essential community infrastructure, including roads, water, power and telecommunications.
Visitor infrastructure may also be allowed, provided it is:
- environmentally sustainable
- carefully designed to fit the landscape
- supports understanding and appreciation of the Area’s natural and cultural values.
