About the Management Plan

The Wet Tropics Management Plan 1998 (the Management Plan) sets out how activities are managed in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (the Area) to protect its World Heritage values. It is made under the Wet Tropics World Heritage Protection and Management Act 1993.

It uses a zoning system and permit framework to guide what activities can occur and where, helping to ensure the Area is conserved for present and future generations.

The Management Plan includes a zoning map, which shows how different parts of the Area are managed.

Management Plan review

The Management Plan must be reviewed at least every 10 years to ensure it:

  • reflects current land management practices
  • responds to new information and community needs
  • continues to protect World Heritage values.

The most recent update took effect on 11 September 2020, including revised zoning.

Registers and other requirements under the Management Plan

The Management Plan requires several registers to be maintained and made publicly available:

These registers provide transparency about decisions and management actions in the Area.

As well as registers, all guidelines made under the Management Plan are publicly available.
