An Indigenous rights-based approach guides how the Wet Tropics Management Authority (WTMA) works across all aspects of World Heritage management. It recognises and respects the rights, interests, knowledge and leadership of Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (the Area).

This approach is embedded in WTMA’s governance, planning and day-to-day operations. Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples are represented on WTMA’s Board and advisory committees, ensuring Indigenous voices help shape decision-making at every level.

WTMA is committed to meaningful engagement, co-design and partnership. This includes working closely with Traditional Owners, seeking cultural guidance and oversight, and creating opportunities for Rainforest Aboriginal peoples to contribute to projects, programs and other strategic initiatives.

WTMA’s Indigenous rights-based approach is a cross-cutting commitment that underpins all areas of its business, strengthening partnerships, supporting Indigenous leadership, and helping deliver better outcomes for Country, culture and World Heritage.
